Dr Andreas Läufer is a structural geologist at the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) based in Hannover, Germany, and head of its Polar Geology Unit. His academic background holds a diploma in geology and a PhD from the University of Tübingen, and an assistant professorship at Goethe University of Frankfurt am Main. Andreas participated in 11 on-land Antarctic expeditions including the ANDRILL project and in 2 Arctic expeditions, in several of these as expedition leader. His work is towards understanding Earth System geodynamics and lithosphere-cryosphere interactions in the Polar Regions from the deep geological past until recent times.
