Jacky Austermann is an Associate Professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Columbia University and works on better understanding how sea level and ice sheets have changed over the past hundreds, thousands, and millions of years. She approaches this topic by collecting paleo sea level observations and modeling solid Earth deformation related to glacial isostatic adjustment and mantle convection. Austermann earned her Ph.D. in Earth Sciences from Harvard University in 2016 and conducted a short postdoc at Cambridge University before joining Columbia University in 2018.
What is your role on the SWAIS2C project?
Glacial Isostatic Adjustment and sea level modeling.
In your own words, what is the SWAIS2C project about?
It's about better understanding how sensitive the Antarctic ice sheet is to warming.
What are you most excited about learning (or possibly learning) as a result of the SWAIS2C project?
Whether and when West Antarctica deglaciated during past interglacials.
