University of Massachusetts - Amherst

Mark Leckie is a micropaleontologist and stratigrapher. His research centers on questions of Earth system history and paleoceanography, with a particular emphasis on biosphere response to changes in the ocean-climate system through time. He studies planktic and benthic foraminifera (marine protists) of Mesozoic and Cenozoic age, and spanning ancient marginal marine, epicontinental sea, deep sea, and Antarctic depositional environments. Dr. Leckie has participated in 7 expeditions of scientific ocean drilling, one as Co-Chief Scientist. He spent 3 field seasons in Antarctica (1976-1980), including the Ross Ice Shelf Project (RISP) and McMurdo Sound Sediment and Tectonic Studies (MSSTS), before returning to the Ross Sea in 2018 with International Ocean Discovery Program Expedition 374.
