Il 16 novembre, un gruppo di ricercatori e tecnici di perforazione partirà da Christchurch (NZ) per l'Antartide per realizzare il progetto internazionale denominato SWAIS2C (Sensitivity of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet to Two Degrees of Warming) per determinare se la piattaforma di ghiaccio di Ross e la piattaforma di ghiaccio dell'Antartide occidentale, nota come WAIS, si scioglieranno a una temperatura media globale prevista di +2°C rispetto ai tempi preindustriali.

Scientists have just got their hands on a 228-metre (748-foot) core sample from the muddy bedrock beneath West Antarctica’s chunky ice sheets. Inside the record-breaking sample, they discovered fossils of marine organisms that date from a time when this area was an open, ice-free ocean.
